Your nervous system governs every aspect of your health. And if you’re like most people in our nature-disconnected, modern world, your nervous system is either chronically stressed, or seriously depleted from the effects of past trauma.
Stress in and of itself is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s necessary for our survival. You’ve probably heard of the fight-or-flight state of the nervous system, which is your body’s response to either a real or perceived threat. In the short term, this allows you to be in a state of hyper-vigilance to deal with the threat and ensure your survival.
But if the threat never goes away, as is the case when you are constantly “putting out fires” (literally or figuratively), your body remains in an unsustainable state, and your tissues begin to break down. All of your resources are diverted to your extremities, and the nervous system is unable to return to its “rest and digest” state. This leads to symptoms which include poor digestion, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, weight gain, hormone imbalances, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems.
