ABOUT DEBBY

I'm Debby Andersen, a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and Yoga Therapist with over a decade of clinical experience, specializing in women's health across all phases of life.

I studied at the Ayurvedic Institute under Dr. Vasant Lad, and was later mentored by Dr. Claudia Welch, whose work on women's hormonal health has shaped how I see and practice. I also teach breathwork in the lineage of David Elliott, whose work opened dimensions of healing I hadn't been able to access through any other modality.

My specialization in women's health is both a calling and a response to something I've witnessed consistently: women are chronically underserved by the systems designed to care for them. Conventional medicine and the wellness industry alike have failed to offer most women a genuine framework for understanding their own bodies. Ayurveda does this by offering a path of self-understanding that belongs to you, rather than the industries selling you the next solution.

My work exists at the intersection of ancient wisdom, clinical rigor, and an honest reckoning with the systems that have made women's health so difficult to navigate.

I see clients individually, lead group programs and retreats, and write about women's health, Ayurveda, and the forces that have shaped both at Feminist Ayurveda on Substack.

my journey

I found yoga and Ayurveda in my early twenties, during a year of travel after college. I had just graduated from the University of Iowa and set off to explore New Zealand, Australia, and Asia with a backpack and no real plan. By the time I reached India, six months in, I was completely run down. The constant movement, lack of routine, and erratic schedule had left my nervous system frayed and my body depleted.

I arrived at an ashram in northern India not really knowing what I was looking for. But within days of practicing yoga, eating simply, and living in alignment with the rhythms of the day, something shifted. I felt more like myself than I had in months. I didn't understand the science of what was happening, but knew I needed to learn more.

That curiosity led me back to India the following year to complete my first yoga certification and an intensive course in Ayurveda. It led me through years of study and practice, and eventually to New Mexico, where I spent two years immersed in training at the Ayurvedic Institute under Dr. Vasant Lad.

Just six months after completing my studies, my partner died suddenly. After two years immersed in the "science of life," I was thrust into a harsh lesson in death and grief. I'm grateful for the deep nourishment and inner strength I gained through the study of Ayurveda, and through the process of my own healing, because without these I'm not sure I would have had the resilience to survive that loss. Grief changed me as a practitioner. It taught me things that no training could. It deepened my capacity to sit with someone in the middle of something hard, without needing to fix it.

I currently live and practice in San Antonio, Texas, known as Yanaguana, the "Land of the Spirit Waters," the ancestral homeland of the Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan Nation. In 2025, I bought my first house here, which now serves as my healing space, where I see clients individually and host group classes and special events.

I share my life with my partner Erik, our two rescue dogs Nacho and Luna, and Francis the cat. Our home has a yard we've begun filling with native plants and raised vegetable gardens, which in turn has become home to wild birds and animals. I grow food, enjoy cooking, and live in a way that's consistent with what I teach: healing to me, my family, and the land I inhabit.
